What are Thread Veins?

Thread veins are visible veins close to the surface of the skin. The medical term for this is telangiectasia varicose veins. They are thin and red irregular lines just below the surface of the skin, and are commonly found on the face and legs (but can appear anywhere on the body).

Thread veins can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Ageing
  • Weight gain
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes e.g. pregnancy
  • Standing for prolonged amounts of time and
  • Too much exposure to the sun, wind or extreme temperatures

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the procedure of thread vein removal?

We use an advanced laser technology to target and destroy the blood vessels which are responsible for thread veins. The laser beam is directed at the unwanted thread vein, heating it up causing it to then collapse and break down on itself. This process is called photothermolysis.

Contact our expert thread vein removal consultants to learn more about the procedure.

  • Is thread vein removal permanent?

After your course of laser thread vein removal the veins removed tend to not reoccur. However, sometimes new veins can appear in other areas of the body which might require treatment. It also depends on the reason why you have the thread veins in the first place. For example, standing for prolonged amounts of time, if this is continued after your course of treatment you will be at risk of new thread veins occurring again.

  • How many treatments will I require?

On average you normally require 1 to 4 treatments depending on the severity of the thread vein.

  • How often can I have a treatment?

It is recommended to have a session every 4 to 8 weeks.

  • Does thread vein removal hurt?

Throughout the treatment cold air is used and a cooling gel is applied to give optimum comfort. The laser itself can feel like a small flick of an elastic band.

  • What are the side effects of thread vein removal?

The laser only targets your unwanted thread vein; there is no risk of the outer skin layers being damaged. After your treatment you may experience some swelling, redness and bruising which this should subside after a few days. It is also common that your thread vein will look immediately darker and pronounced; this is perfectly normal and will go once the vein is broken down.
